Deregulation
- Who do I call if the power lines are damaged or the power goes out? No matter which retail electric provider you choose, your electricity will continue to be delivered safely and reliably by the local wires company, a company still regulated by the PUC. Phone numbers for which company to call when your power goes out are on every bill you receive from Liberty Power.
- Will service reliability change? No. The delivery of energy is still regulated so the wires are well maintained. This will guarantee that you will obtain power with the equivalent service reliability you have always known.
- What happens if my Retail Electric Provider stops serving customers? You will not be without electricity. Your Retail Electric Provider must give you 30 days' advance notice to give you time to select a new provider. However, if you do not choose a new provider, your service will automatically be switched to the Provider of Last Resort for your area.
- Who will read my meter if I purchase from Liberty Power? Because the incumbent utility still charges for the delivery of electricity, the utility still reads your meter. The utility informs Liberty Power of your actual meter readings, which we use for billing.
- Why is there electricity rate volatility? Several factors cause electricity prices to go up and down. Like any commodity, electricity prices respond to supply and demand factors. When demand is high, such as a hot August day, prices for electricity rise. Alternatively, prices rise when fuel is expensive, such as February 2003 when fuel prices skyrocketed due to possible future shortages and other uncertainties in the market.
- Where does my electricity come from if I purchase from Liberty Power Corp? Liberty Power purchases electricity from the same power plants that currently supply you electricity.
- What is an ESI-ID? "Electric Service Identification". It is a number that categorizes your port of electric service. This number is not your account or meter number. We can research this number by providing a service location, or previous account or meter number. If you have a previous electric bill the ESI-ID should be listed on it.
- What is Slamming? Slamming is the illegal practice of switching your electric service without your permission.
- What is Cramming? Cramming is the illegal practice of adding charges to your electric bill for additional services without your permission.
- How can I make sure I am not slammed or crammed? Preventative measures have been taken to prevent slamming and cramming. First, do not give any provider any account information unless you want to switch to that provider. Second, if a provider change is requested, a Terms of Service agreement will be provided to you. You have three days from the date you receive the Terms of Service agreement to cancel your switch request.
Slamming and cramming are illegal in Texas. The Public Utility Commission of Texas will enforce this law. If you think youÕve been slammed, call the PUC Consumer Hotline toll-free at 1-888-PUC-TIPS (1-888-782-8477) or visit www.puc.state.tx.us/ocp.
- I received a letter from a provider thanking me for choosing them, but I did not choose them. What do I do? If this occurs, you should call the Retail Electric Provider immediately to discuss the situation. If the provider insists they were chosen, you should ask them to send you a copy of the authorization. If the provider cannot provide it, and you think you have been slammed, you should contact the PUC Consumer Hotline toll-free at 1-888-PUC-TIPS (1-888-782-8477) or visit www.puc.state.tx.us/ocp.
